i’m a non-binary vocalist and voice nerd offering gender- affirming voice lessons, singing lessons for people who think they can’t sing, and lessons for seasoned vocalists who need support. 

my work is to support students in building a deeper relationship with their voice through curiosity, play, and self-compassion.

I studied voice with Em regularly for a year, and still notice the benefits two years later. Their patient training helped me with vocal control, accuracy and improvisation, and they managed to teach me a lot about music theory, sight reading and my own abilities while they were at it. I always felt that Em’s lessons were personally tailored to my abilities and my goals, and they helped develop a vocal foundation I have been able to apply to a wide variety of musical styles including jazz, pop, folk and heavy metal. I’m grateful that now, in my early 40s, I was finally bold enough to try out voice lessons, and a big part of why I felt I could do that was because I felt so comfortable around Em. They listened to my hopes and concerns and instantly put me at ease. Their teaching style drew out my curiosity – as a biology nerd, I loved how they explained vocal techniques by referencing the anatomy of the throat and vocal cords! I was pleasantly surprised how well the lessons worked over Zoom, and thankful that we also got to try a lesson in person, where they could identify even more ways to help me. At the end of every lesson, Em sent detailed notes with practice tips, reminders of the warm-ups we did, and links to examples, which was super helpful. Em offers incredible value for the cost of their teaching, and brings so much skill and experience to their lessons. I couldn’t recommend them more highly!

Hello, I’m Em, a queer, non-binary voice teacher living in so-called British Columbia, Canada. I hold a bachelors in jazz voice, have ten years of teaching experience and have recently completed Renee Yoxon’s Trans Voice Alteration course. You can find me performing with Only a Visitor, Moondle and Streams Poetry Project. When I’m not teaching or making music I spend my time connecting with nature, making herbal medicine and digging in the dirt.
